Q: Our company provides medical benefits for employees’ family members. Is this benefit taxable on the employees?

A: Medical benefits provided directly to an employee are generally exempted from tax as per Public Ruling on Benefits In Kind . However, this exemption does not extend to medical benefits enjoyed by the employee’s family members.

If the employer pays for medical treatment for the employee’s spouse, children, or other family members, the value of the benefit will generally be treated as a taxable benefit to the employee and is required to be declared in the employee’s Form EA.
